About This Flag
The flag of Suriname consists of five horizontal bands β green, white, red (double width), white, and green β with a large yellow five-pointed star centered on the red stripe. The green represents the fertile land and hope for progress.
White stands for justice and freedom. The red symbolizes the progressive spirit and the blood of the struggle for a better life.
The yellow star represents the golden future, unity, and the sacrifice of the people; it also symbolizes the nation's diverse ethnic groups (Indigenous, African, Indian, Javanese, Chinese, and European) coming together as one. The flag was adopted on November 25, 1975, when Suriname gained independence from the Netherlands.
