About This Flag
The flag of Togo consists of five equal horizontal stripes alternating green and yellow, with a red canton in the upper hoist bearing a white five-pointed star. Adopted on April 27, 1960, the flag was designed by artist Paul Ahyi and chosen through a national competition ahead of independence from France.
The five stripes represent the five administrative regions of Togo at independence. Green symbolizes agriculture and hope, yellow stands for mineral resources and faith in the value of labor, and the red canton commemorates the blood shed by martyrs for independence.
The white star represents life, purity, and peace.
