About This Flag
The flag of Myanmar consists of three equal horizontal stripes of yellow on top, green in the middle, and red on the bottom, with a large white five-pointed star centered on the flag overlapping all three stripes. The yellow represents solidarity and unity among the country's diverse ethnic groups, the green symbolizes peace, tranquility, and the lush natural environment, and the red stands for courage and determination.
The white star represents the significance of the union of the country. This flag was adopted on October 21, 2010, replacing the previous socialist-era flag (a blue canton with a gear, rice paddy, and stars on a red field) that had been used since 1974.

Fun Facts
- Myanmar's current flag was unveiled on October 21, 2010, just weeks before the country's first general election in 20 years, as part of a broader transition from direct military rule.
- The previous flag (1974-2010) featured a blue canton with 14 white stars surrounding a gear wheel and rice paddy, symbolizing the 14 administrative divisions and the socialist state's focus on industry and agriculture.
- Myanmar's flag change was part of a wider rebranding that included a new national anthem, a new state seal, and the official renaming of the country from Burma to Myanmar (though 'Burma' had been replaced diplomatically in 1989).
- Myanmar is the largest country in mainland Southeast Asia by area and is home to over 135 officially recognized ethnic groups.
