About This Flag
Four horizontal stripes of yellow, white, red, and blue from top to bottom, with a green triangle on the hoist side bearing a white crescent facing the fly side and four white five-pointed stars arranged vertically between the crescent's points. The four stripes and four stars represent the four islands of the Comoros archipelago: Grande Comore (Ngazidja), Moheli (Mwali), Anjouan (Nzwani), and Mayotte (Maore), although Mayotte remains a French overseas territory.
The green triangle and crescent represent Islam, the dominant religion. The current flag was adopted on January 7, 2002, as part of a new constitution that restructured the nation as a union of semi-autonomous islands.
What the colors & design mean
The four horizontal stripes and four stars each represent one of the four islands: yellow for Moheli, white for Mayotte, red for Anjouan, and blue for Grande Comore. The green triangle symbolizes Islam. The white crescent is a traditional Islamic symbol representing faith.
Pattern: Horizontal Stripes
Fun Facts

- Comoros has experienced more than 20 coups or attempted coups since independence in 1975, making it one of the most politically volatile nations in the world.
- The Comoros Islands are the world's largest producer of ylang-ylang, an essential oil used in many luxury perfumes including Chanel No. 5.
- The name 'Comoros' derives from the Arabic word 'qamar,' meaning moon, which connects to the crescent on the flag.
