About This Flag
The flag of Paraguay consists of three equal horizontal bands of red on top, white in the middle, and blue on the bottom β and is unique among national flags in that the obverse (front) and reverse (back) bear different emblems on the white stripe. The obverse displays the national coat of arms (a star surrounded by a wreath within a circle reading 'Republica del Paraguay'), while the reverse shows the treasury seal (a lion guarding a Phrygian cap of liberty with the motto 'Paz y Justicia').
The red represents patriotism, courage, and equality; white symbolizes peace, unity, and purity; and blue stands for freedom, love, and religious faith. The flag was adopted on November 25, 1842, and modified most recently in 2013.

Fun Facts
- Paraguay's flag is one of only three national flags with different designs on the front and back (the others are Moldova and Saudi Arabia), making it one of the most complex flags to manufacture.
- The lion on the treasury seal on the reverse side guards a Phrygian cap of liberty β a symbol borrowed from the French Revolution that appears on many Latin American national symbols.
- Paraguay is one of only two landlocked countries in South America (the other is Bolivia) and is bisected by the Paraguay River, which divides the country into two distinct geographic regions.
- Paraguay is one of the most bilingual nations in the Americas β Guarani, an indigenous language, is spoken by over 90% of the population alongside Spanish, and both are official languages.
