About This Flag
The flag of Brazil features a green field with a large yellow (gold) diamond shape in the center, containing a dark blue celestial globe with 27 white five-pointed stars and a curved white band bearing the national motto 'Ordem e Progresso' ('Order and Progress'). The green represents the House of Braganza of Emperor Pedro I, and the gold represents the House of Habsburg of Empress Leopoldina β though popularly, green is associated with the forests and gold with the mineral wealth.
The celestial globe depicts the night sky over Rio de Janeiro as it appeared on November 15, 1889, the date the republic was proclaimed. Each of the 27 stars represents a specific Brazilian state or the Federal District.
The current version was adopted on May 11, 1992, after new states were added.
What the colors & design mean
Green represents the forests and natural abundance of Brazil (originally the House of Braganza). Yellow symbolizes the mineral wealth and gold (originally the House of Habsburg). The blue globe represents the sky. The stars represent the 26 states and Federal District. The motto 'Order and Progress' comes from Auguste Comte's positivist philosophy.

Fun Facts
- Each of the 27 stars on the flag represents a specific state or the Federal District, and their positions correspond to the actual stars visible over Rio de Janeiro on the morning of November 15, 1889.
- Brazil's motto 'Ordem e Progresso' is a shortened version of Auguste Comte's positivist maxim 'Love as a principle, order as the basis, and progress as the goal.'
- Brazil is the fifth-largest country in the world by area and population, and it is the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas.
- The flag has been updated several times as new states were created β the most recent change was in 1992 when four stars were added to represent the states of Amapa, Roraima, Rondonia, and Tocantins.
