About This Flag
The flag of Ecuador consists of three horizontal bands — a wider yellow (gold) band on top occupying half the height, with blue and red bands of equal size below — identical in layout to Colombia's flag, but with the national coat of arms centered on the flag. The coat of arms features Mount Chimborazo (the country's highest peak), a river flowing to the Pacific, a steamship, a sun, and a condor with outstretched wings above.
The colors derive from Francisco de Miranda's Gran Colombian tricolor: yellow for abundance and the richness of the land, blue for the ocean and sky, and red for the blood shed by independence heroes. The flag with the coat of arms was officially adopted on September 26, 1860.
What the colors & design mean
Yellow represents the abundance and richness of Ecuador's land and harvests. Blue symbolizes the ocean and sky. Red stands for the blood shed by independence heroes. The coat of arms depicts the nation's geography, from the Andes to the Pacific, with the condor representing pride and power.

Fun Facts
- Ecuador's flag without the coat of arms is virtually identical to Colombia's and Venezuela's — all three are derived from the same Miranda tricolor and share the unique half-width yellow stripe.
- Ecuador is named after the Equator, which runs directly through the country — the word 'ecuador' is Spanish for 'equator.'
- Mount Chimborazo, depicted on the coat of arms, is technically the farthest point from the Earth's center due to the equatorial bulge, making its summit the closest point on Earth to the sun.
- The condor on the coat of arms is the Andean condor, one of the world's largest flying birds, with a wingspan reaching over 3 meters.
