About This Flag
The flag of Uzbekistan consists of three equal horizontal bands of blue on top, white in the middle, and green on the bottom, separated by thin red fimbriation (border) lines. In the upper-left corner of the blue band sits a white crescent moon and twelve white five-pointed stars arranged in three rows.
The blue represents water and the sky, and is also a tribute to the banner of Timur (Tamerlane), the 14th-century conqueror who ruled from Samarkand. White stands for peace and purity, green symbolizes nature and fertility, and the red stripes represent the life force in all living things.
The crescent symbolizes the new nation's rebirth, and the 12 stars represent the 12 months and the 12 regions of Uzbekistan. Adopted on November 18, 1991.

Fun Facts
- The blue band is a deliberate tribute to the flag of Timur (Tamerlane), the 14th-century conqueror who built his empire from Samarkand β Timur's banner was sky blue.
- Samarkand, one of Uzbekistan's ancient cities, was a crucial stop on the Silk Road and contains the Registan, a complex of three madrasas that is one of the most iconic architectural ensembles in Central Asia.
- Uzbekistan is one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world (the other is Liechtenstein), meaning one must cross at least two borders to reach the nearest ocean.
- The 12 stars on the flag match the 12 regions (viloyats) of the country and the 12 months of the year, representing completeness and order.
