About This Flag
Three equal horizontal bands of green (top), white (middle), and red (bottom) with a blue isosceles triangle on the hoist side and the national coat of arms centered on the white band. The coat of arms features a silk-cotton tree beneath which the first treaties with Spain were signed, six yellow six-pointed stars representing the mainland and five islands, and a scroll bearing the national motto.
The current design was adopted on August 21, 1979, following independence from Spain in 1968, though the original 1968 flag was similar with a slightly different coat of arms.
What the colors & design mean
Green symbolizes the country's natural resources and tropical forests. White represents peace. Red stands for the blood shed during the struggle for independence. The blue triangle represents the sea connecting the mainland to the islands. The six stars represent Bioko, Annobon, Corisco, Elobey Grande, Elobey Chico, and Rio Muni.
Pattern: Horizontal Stripes
