About This Flag
The flag of Cambodia consists of three horizontal bands — blue on the top and bottom, with a wider red band in the center that features a white depiction of Angkor Wat, the famous 12th-century temple complex. The blue represents the monarchy, the red symbolizes the nation and the courage of its people, and the white Angkor Wat stands for integrity, justice, and the country's cultural heritage.
Cambodia is one of only a few countries whose flag depicts a real building. Readopted in 1993 when the monarchy was restored, this design closely mirrors the flag used during the pre-republican Kingdom of Cambodia from 1948 to 1970.
What the colors & design mean
Blue represents the monarchy and the king. Red symbolizes the nation, bravery, and the blood of the Cambodian people. White Angkor Wat signifies integrity and justice, and represents Cambodia's ancient Khmer civilization and enduring cultural heritage.

Fun Facts
- Cambodia is one of only three countries in the world whose flag features a building — the others are Afghanistan (in some versions) and San Marino.
- Cambodia has had more flag changes than almost any Asian country, cycling through at least six distinct designs since 1948 due to political upheavals including the Khmer Republic, the Khmer Rouge regime, and Vietnamese occupation.
- Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world, covering over 400 acres, and it originally served as a Hindu temple before being converted to Buddhism.
- The current flag is nearly identical to the one used by the Kingdom of Cambodia from 1948 to 1970, before the monarchy was overthrown by Lon Nol's republic.
