About This Flag

The flag of Armenia consists of three equal horizontal bands of red on top, blue in the middle, and orange (sometimes called apricot) on the bottom. The red represents the Armenian Highland, the struggle for survival, and the maintenance of Christian faith.

The blue stands for the will of the Armenian people to live under peaceful skies, and the orange symbolizes the creative talent and hard-working nature of the nation. Originally adopted when Armenia declared independence in 1918 as part of the short-lived First Republic, the tricolor was restored on August 24, 1990, as Soviet rule collapsed, making it one of the earliest post-Soviet flags.

What the colors & design mean

Fun Facts

  • Armenia's flag uses orange rather than the more common red-blue-yellow or red-blue-white combinations, making it one of the few national flags to feature orange as a primary color.
  • The original 1918 tricolor was used for only two years before Soviet rule replaced it with a red communist banner, but it remained a powerful symbol of Armenian identity throughout the Soviet period.
  • The Armenian Apostolic Church, one of the oldest Christian institutions in the world, considers Armenia the first country to have adopted Christianity as a state religion in 301 AD.
  • Mount Ararat, which appears on Armenia's coat of arms and is central to Armenian identity, is actually located across the border in Turkey.
