About This Flag
The flag of Brunei features a yellow field cut by two diagonal stripes of white and black running from the upper hoist to the lower fly side, with the national emblem in red centered on the flag. The yellow represents the Sultan, the head of state, and has been the royal color of the Malay rulers for centuries.
The white and black diagonal stripes represent Brunei's two chief ministers (Pengiran Bendahara and Pengiran Pemancha). The red emblem includes a crescent (symbolizing Islam), an umbrella (royal symbol), wings, and a banner reading 'Brunei Darussalam' ('Brunei, Abode of Peace').
The flag was adopted on September 29, 1959, when the country's first constitution was promulgated under British protection.
