About This Flag

The flag of the United Arab Emirates consists of three equal horizontal bands of green on top, white in the middle, and black on the bottom, with a vertical red band on the hoist side. The four colors are the pan-Arab colors: red represents the unity of the Arab people and the sacrifices of past generations, green symbolizes fertility, prosperity, and the country's agricultural past, white represents peace and neutrality, and black represents the strength and courage of the nation as well as its oil wealth.

The flag was designed by Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, who was 19 years old at the time, and was adopted on December 2, 1971, when the seven emirates formally united into a single federation.

What the colors & design mean

Fun Facts

  • The flag was designed by 19-year-old Abdullah Mohammed Al Maainah, who won a national competition and later served as a diplomat β€” his winning design was chosen from over 1,000 entries.
  • Before federation in 1971, each emirate had its own distinct flag, and many were simply red or red-and-white designs common to Gulf states.
  • The UAE was formed from seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah, and Fujairah β€” Ras Al Khaimah was the last to join, in February 1972.
  • The Burj Khalifa in Dubai, at 828 meters, is the tallest structure ever built, and the UAE's rapid transformation from a fishing and pearl-diving economy to a global hub took less than 50 years.
