About This Flag
The flag of Jordan consists of three equal horizontal bands of black on top, white in the middle, and green on the bottom, with a red chevron (triangle) on the hoist side bearing a small white seven-pointed star at its center. The colors are the pan-Arab colors representing the Abbasid (black), Umayyad (white), and Fatimid (green) dynasties, while the red triangle represents the Hashemite dynasty and the Arab Revolt of 1916 against Ottoman rule.
The seven-pointed star represents the seven verses of the opening sura of the Quran (Al-Fatiha), as well as the unity of Arab peoples. The flag was officially adopted on April 16, 1928.

Fun Facts
- Jordan's flag is nearly identical to the Palestinian flag — the key difference is Jordan's white seven-pointed star in the red triangle, which Palestine's flag lacks.
- The Hashemite dynasty ruling Jordan traces its lineage directly to the Prophet Muhammad, giving the red triangle both political and religious significance.
- The flag's design was directly inspired by the banner of the Great Arab Revolt of 1916-1918, led by Sharif Hussein bin Ali against the Ottoman Empire with British support.
- Jordan is home to the ancient Nabataean city of Petra, carved into rose-red sandstone cliffs over 2,000 years ago and named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
