About This Flag
The flag of Kuwait consists of three equal horizontal bands of green on top, white in the middle, and red on the bottom, with a black trapezoid on the hoist side. The four colors are the pan-Arab colors, each representing a different historical Arab dynasty or concept.
Green symbolizes the fertile land, white represents purity and peace, red stands for the blood of enemies, and black represents the defeat of those enemies. The design was inspired by a verse attributed to the Arab poet Safie Al-Deen Al-Hili.
Adopted on September 7, 1961, upon independence from Britain, the flag replaced a plain red banner with a white serrated edge that had been in use since the 19th century.
What the colors & design mean
Green represents the fertile land and fields. White symbolizes purity, honor, and peaceful deeds. Red stands for the blood shed by enemies on the battlefield. Black represents the defeat of those enemies. Together the colors form a pan-Arab symbol inspired by medieval Arabic poetry.
