About This Flag
The flag of Palestine consists of three equal horizontal bands of black on top, white in the middle, and green on the bottom, with a red triangle on the hoist side. The design uses the four pan-Arab colors, each representing a historical Arab dynasty: black for the Abbasid Caliphate, white for the Umayyad Caliphate, green for the Fatimid Caliphate, and red for the Hashemite dynasty and the Arab Revolt.
The flag is derived from the 1916 Arab Revolt flag and was adopted by the Palestinian people as a national symbol in 1964 when the Palestine Liberation Organization was established. It is nearly identical to Jordan's flag but without the white seven-pointed star.
What the colors & design mean
Black represents the Abbasid dynasty. White represents the Umayyad dynasty. Green represents the Fatimid dynasty. Red represents the Hashemite dynasty and the blood shed in the struggle for self-determination. Together the pan-Arab colors symbolize Arab unity and Palestinian national identity.

Fun Facts
- The Palestinian flag is nearly identical to the Jordanian flag — the only difference is that Jordan's flag includes a white seven-pointed star in the red triangle.
- The flag was banned by Israel in the occupied territories from 1967 until the Oslo Accords in 1993, and displaying it was considered an act of political protest.
- The flag's design was originally created for the 1916 Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire and was later specifically adopted by the Palestinian nationalist movement.
- The same basic four-color pan-Arab design (black, white, green, red) is shared by Jordan, Palestine, Sudan, Kuwait, the UAE, and several other Arab states, each with distinct arrangements.
