About This Flag
The flag of Liechtenstein consists of two equal horizontal bands of blue on top and red on the bottom, with a gold princely crown on the blue stripe near the hoist side. The blue represents the sky, and the red symbolizes the evening fires that were once lit in the homes throughout the principality.
The crown was added in 1937 after the country discovered at the 1936 Berlin Olympics that its flag was identical to Haiti's civil flag. The gold crown represents the unity of the people and their prince and is modeled on the crown of the Prince of Liechtenstein.
The principality is one of the smallest countries in the world, nestled between Switzerland and Austria in the Alps.
What the colors & design mean
Blue represents the radiant sky above the Alpine principality. Red symbolizes the glowing embers of evening fires in Liechtenstein's homes. The gold crown represents the prince and the unity between the ruling house and the people of Liechtenstein.

Fun Facts
- Liechtenstein added the crown to its flag in 1937 specifically because the 1936 Berlin Olympics revealed that its blue-and-red bicolor was identical to Haiti's civil flag.
- Liechtenstein is one of only two doubly landlocked countries in the world (the other is Uzbekistan), meaning you must cross at least two borders to reach the sea.
- The country is so small (160 square kilometers) that it was accidentally invaded by Switzerland in 2007 when Swiss army soldiers crossed the unmarked border during a training exercise.
- The House of Liechtenstein, which gives the country its name, is one of the wealthiest royal families in Europe, with assets exceeding several billion dollars.
