About This Flag
The flag of Andorra consists of three equal vertical bands of blue on the hoist side, yellow in the center, and red on the fly side, with the national coat of arms centered on the yellow stripe. The coat of arms features a quartered shield with the symbols of the Bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix (now represented by the French President), Andorra's two co-princes.
The blue and red are drawn from the French tricolor, while the yellow and red reference the Spanish flag, reflecting Andorra's position as a principality nestled between France and Spain in the Pyrenees mountains. The flag with the coat of arms was officially adopted on August 27, 1971.
What the colors & design mean
Blue and red reference France, while yellow and red reference Spain — Andorra's two neighboring co-ruling powers. The coat of arms includes the mitre and crozier of the Bishop of Urgell and the three red bars of the Count of Foix, representing the shared sovereignty.

Fun Facts
- Andorra is one of the few countries in the world with two heads of state — the President of France and the Bishop of Urgell (Spain) serve as co-princes, a feudal arrangement dating back to 1278.
- Without the coat of arms, Andorra's flag is nearly identical to the flags of Romania, Chad, and Moldova, all of which use blue-yellow-red vertical stripes.
- Andorra is a microstate of only 468 square kilometers tucked in the Pyrenees mountains, making it the sixth-smallest country in Europe.
- The country had no formal constitution until 1993 and was technically a feudal state for over 700 years, making it one of the last feudal systems to be reformed in Europe.
