About This Flag
The flag of Pakistan features a dark green field with a white vertical stripe on the hoist side, occupying one-quarter of the flag's width. On the green field sits a white crescent moon and a white five-pointed star.
The green represents the Muslim majority of the country and Islam, while the white stripe represents religious minorities and their rights within the nation. The crescent symbolizes progress, and the star represents light and knowledge.
The flag was designed by Syed Amir-uddin Kedwaii and was adopted on August 11, 1947, three days before Pakistan's independence from British India on August 14.

Fun Facts
- Pakistan's flag deliberately includes a white stripe for non-Muslim minorities, making it one of the few national flags with an explicit visual symbol of minority representation.
- The flag is based on the banner of the All-India Muslim League, the political party that advocated for the creation of Pakistan — the original League banner was entirely green with a white crescent and star.
- The exact shade of green has been standardized as 'Pakistan green' — a distinctive dark green that is unique to the country's flag.
- Pakistan's name is an acronym-like construction coined by Choudhry Rahmat Ali in 1933: P for Punjab, A for Afghania (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), K for Kashmir, S for Sindh, and 'tan' from Balochistan.
