About This Flag

Three equal vertical bands of orange (hoist side), white (center), and green (fly side). The design is intentionally a mirror image of the Irish tricolor, though the resemblance is coincidental and the colors carry entirely different meanings.

Adopted on December 3, 1959, one year before full independence from France in 1960, the flag was chosen during the drafting of the new republic's constitution. The simple tricolor has no emblem or coat of arms, and its design has remained unchanged since adoption.

What the colors & design mean

Orange represents the northern savanna region and its fertile soil, as well as the spirit of national growth. White symbolizes peace and unity between the north and south. Green represents the coastal forests of the south and hope for the future.

  • Ivory Coast officially asked the international community in 1986 to use only the French name Cote d'Ivoire in all languages, though many English speakers still say Ivory Coast.
  • The country is the world's largest producer of cocoa beans, supplying roughly 40% of global cocoa output.
  • Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in Yamoussoukro is the largest church in the world by area, surpassing St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.
