About This Flag
The flag of Italy, known as il Tricolore, consists of three equal vertical bands of green on the hoist side, white in the center, and red on the fly side. The tricolor was first adopted on January 7, 1797, by the Cispadane Republic (a Napoleonic client state in northern Italy), making it one of the earliest national tricolors in Europe.
The design was inspired by the French Tricolore, replacing the blue with green. The colors are traditionally interpreted as representing hope (green), faith (white), and charity (red), though alternative interpretations link them to the Italian landscape: the green plains, the snowy Alps, and the blood of the wars of Italian unification (the Risorgimento).
The flag was officially adopted in its current form on June 18, 1946, when Italy became a republic.
What the colors & design mean
Green represents hope and the fertile Italian plains. White symbolizes faith and the snow-capped Alps. Red stands for charity and the blood shed during the Risorgimento — the wars of Italian unification in the 19th century.

Fun Facts
- The Italian tricolor predates Italian unification by over 60 years — it was first used in 1797, but Italy did not become a unified nation until 1861.
- January 7 is celebrated as Festa del Tricolore (Tricolor Day) in Italy, marking the anniversary of the first adoption of the green-white-red flag in 1797.
- Italy's flag is often confused with Mexico's, which also features green-white-red vertical stripes but includes a detailed coat of arms (an eagle eating a serpent on a cactus) and has different proportions.
- The Italian kingdom's flag (1861-1946) featured the royal House of Savoy coat of arms on the white stripe — this was removed when Italy voted to abolish the monarchy and become a republic in 1946.
