About This Flag
The flag of Bulgaria consists of three equal horizontal bands of white on top, green in the middle, and red on the bottom. The white represents peace, love, and freedom, the green symbolizes the agricultural wealth and forests of the country, and the red stands for the courage and blood shed in the struggle for national independence.
The tricolor was first adopted in 1879, one year after Bulgaria gained autonomy from the Ottoman Empire following the Russo-Turkish War. During the communist period (1946-1990), the national emblem was placed on the white stripe, but it was removed when Bulgaria transitioned to democracy.
What the colors & design mean

Fun Facts
- Bulgaria's original 1879 flag had the green stripe in a slightly different shade, and the proportions have been adjusted several times, but the basic white-green-red design has remained constant for over 140 years.
- During the communist period, the Bulgarian coat of arms on the white stripe included a lion, wheat sheaves, and a red star โ all of which were removed in 1990.
- Bulgaria was the first Slavic country to adopt the Cyrillic alphabet, developed in the 9th century by disciples of Saints Cyril and Methodius at the Preslav Literary School.
- The green stripe originally represented the forests of the Balkans, particularly significant because Bulgaria's mountainous interior was heavily forested and served as a refuge during centuries of Ottoman rule.
