About This Flag
The flag of San Marino consists of two equal horizontal bands of white on top and light blue on the bottom, with the national coat of arms centered on the boundary between the bands. The coat of arms features a shield with three towers (Guaita, Cesta, and Montale) on three peaks of Mount Titano, crowned by a plumed crown and surrounded by an oak and a laurel branch.
The white represents peace and the snow on Mount Titano, while the blue symbolizes the sky and liberty. San Marino claims to be the oldest surviving sovereign state and the oldest constitutional republic in the world, founded in 301 AD by Saint Marinus, a Christian stonemason fleeing Roman persecution.
What the colors & design mean
White represents peace, virtue, and the snow of Mount Titano. Light blue symbolizes the sky and freedom. The three towers on the coat of arms represent the three citadels of San Marino, each on a peak of Mount Titano, and are the country's most iconic symbol.

Fun Facts
- San Marino claims to be the world's oldest republic, founded in 301 AD by Saint Marinus, a Christian stonemason who fled Roman persecution and established a small community on Mount Titano.
- The entire country is only 61 square kilometers and is completely surrounded by Italy, making it one of three countries entirely enclaved within another (along with Vatican City and Lesotho).
- The three towers of San Marino (Guaita, Cesta, and Montale) that appear on the flag are real medieval fortifications still standing on the peaks of Mount Titano and are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
- San Marino has more registered vehicles than citizens and produces its own postage stamps, which are a significant source of revenue and are prized by collectors worldwide.
