About This Flag
The flag of Slovenia consists of three equal horizontal bands of white on top, blue in the middle, and red on the bottom, with the national coat of arms in the upper-left corner spanning the white and blue stripes. The coat of arms features a shield with Mount Triglav (Slovenia's highest peak) in white against a blue background, with two wavy blue lines below representing the Adriatic Sea and Slovenian rivers, and three yellow six-pointed stars above arranged in an inverted triangle, taken from the coat of arms of the medieval Counts of Celje.
The flag was adopted on June 25, 1991, the day Slovenia declared independence from Yugoslavia.
What the colors & design mean
White, blue, and red are the pan-Slavic colors. The coat of arms' Mount Triglav represents Slovenia's Alpine identity. The two wavy lines symbolize the Adriatic coast and the rivers flowing through the country. The three stars are from the heraldic tradition of the Counts of Celje, a powerful medieval Slovenian dynasty.

Fun Facts
- Slovenia's flag was adopted on June 25, 1991, the same day independence was declared, and the country's subsequent Ten-Day War with Yugoslavia was one of the shortest armed conflicts in modern history.
- The coat of arms features Mount Triglav (2,864 m), whose name means 'Three-headed' — climbing it is considered a rite of passage for Slovenians and a symbol of national pride.
- Slovenia's flag uses the same white-blue-red horizontal stripes as Russia's and Slovakia's, which is why the coat of arms is essential for distinguishing them.
- Despite being one of Europe's smaller countries, Slovenia contains Alpine mountains, Mediterranean coastline, Pannonian plains, and karst caves — the word 'karst' itself comes from the Slovenian Kras region.
