Judaism is the covenantal monotheistic tradition of the Jewish people, whose origins trace back roughly 3,500 years to the patriarch Abraham and the Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt under Moses, to whom God is said to have revealed the Torah at Mount Sinai. Scripture is the Tanakh — the Hebrew Bible — and its study is deepened through the Talmud, the vast rabbinic compilation of oral law and commentary that has shaped Jewish practice for nearly two millennia. Religious life is structured by halakha, the path of Jewish law governing prayer, diet, ethics, family life, and the weekly Sabbath. Worship centers on the synagogue, where services feature Torah readings, liturgical prayers, and the leadership of rabbis rather than priests. Major branches include Orthodox, Conservative, Reform, and Reconstructionist Judaism, each interpreting tradition differently. There are approximately 15 million Jews worldwide, concentrated in Israel, the United States, and historic diaspora communities across Europe and the Americas.
