About This Flag

The flag of the Cayman Islands is a British Blue Ensign โ€” a blue field with the Union Jack in the upper-hoist canton โ€” defaced with the Cayman Islands coat of arms on the fly. The arms show a shield divided by wavy lines representing the sea, bearing three green five-pointed stars (one for each of the three islands: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman).

Above the shield sits a gold English lion; below, on a scroll, the motto "He hath founded it upon the seas" (Psalm 24:2). The flag was first adopted on May 14, 1958.

What the colors & design mean

The Union Jack reflects the territory's status as a British Overseas Territory. The three green stars represent the three main Cayman Islands. The wavy blue-and-white bars symbolize the Caribbean Sea. The lion above the shield is a traditional symbol of England. The motto references the islands' maritime heritage.

Fun Facts

  • The coat of arms includes a crest with a green sea turtle atop a pineapple and a thatch-palm rope โ€” all items historically significant to Cayman culture.
  • The flag's motto "He hath founded it upon the seas" is drawn from Psalm 24:2 in the King James Bible.
  • The three stars on the flag correspond directly to the three inhabited islands; Little Cayman is the smallest with a population of under 200.
  • Cayman's current flag dates to 1958, but the version formally granted by Royal Warrant came in 1959 and has been modified slightly since.
