About This Flag
The flag of the Bahamas consists of three equal horizontal bands — aquamarine (turquoise) on top and bottom with a gold (yellow) band in the center — and a black equilateral triangle on the hoist side. The aquamarine represents the surrounding Caribbean Sea and Atlantic Ocean waters that define the archipelago.
The gold stripe symbolizes the sandy beaches and the bright Bahamian sunshine. The black triangle represents the unity and determination of the Bahamian people to develop and control the nation's resources.
The flag was adopted on July 10, 1973, when the Bahamas gained independence from the United Kingdom, and was selected from entries in a national competition.
