About This Flag
The flag of Dominica features a green field with a centered cross of three bands — yellow, black, and white — and a red disc at the center bearing a Sisserou parrot encircled by ten green five-pointed stars. The green represents the lush vegetation of the island.
The cross symbolizes Christianity and the Trinity. The three cross colors represent the Trinity, the soil, and the pure water.
The ten stars around the parrot represent the ten parishes of Dominica. The Sisserou parrot (Amazona imperialis), found only on Dominica, is the national bird and appears on the flag as a symbol of the island's unique natural heritage.
The flag was adopted on November 3, 1978, upon independence from Britain, and has been slightly modified several times since.

Fun Facts
- Dominica is one of only two countries with a purple element on its national flag — the Sisserou parrot has purple plumage. (Nicaragua is the other, with a faint rainbow on its coat of arms.)
- The Sisserou parrot is found only on Dominica and is critically endangered, with a wild population estimated at fewer than 500 individuals.
- Dominica is known as the 'Nature Isle of the Caribbean' and has one of the most pristine rainforests in the region, with 365 rivers — reportedly one for each day of the year.
- The flag has been modified four times since independence (1981, 1988, 1990) — each time adjusting the parrot design or the shade of colors.
