About This Flag
The flag of Gibraltar consists of two horizontal bands โ a wider white band on top and a narrower red band below, in roughly 2:1 proportion โ with a red three-towered castle centered on the white band and a single gold key hanging from the central tower down into the red band. The design is drawn directly from the Royal Warrant issued by Isabella I of Castile on July 10, 1502, which granted Gibraltar its coat of arms.
The banner version was officially adopted on November 8, 1982.
What the colors & design mean
The red castle represents the Rock of Gibraltar and its fortifications โ a central element of Gibraltar's identity since the Moorish period. The gold key symbolizes Gibraltar's strategic role as the "Key to the Mediterranean," commanding the strait between Europe and Africa. Red and white are the colors of the Castilian arms granted by Queen Isabella.

Fun Facts
- Gibraltar's coat of arms is among the oldest still in continuous use anywhere โ its design dates to the original 1502 Royal Warrant from Queen Isabella I of Castile.
- Gibraltar is unusual among British Overseas Territories in not using the standard blue ensign format; its banner uses the territory's own heraldry instead.
- The flag was officially adopted on November 8, 1982, by a decree from the Governor โ just weeks before the frontier with Spain, closed since 1969, was reopened to pedestrians.
- The three castle towers in the flag are rendered as masoned (showing individual blocks), a heraldic convention preserved from the 1502 grant.
