About This Flag
The flag of Costa Rica consists of five horizontal bands โ blue, white, red (double width), white, and blue โ with the national coat of arms on a white oval on the hoist side of the red stripe (on the state flag variant). The blue represents the sky, opportunity, and perseverance.
White symbolizes peace, wisdom, and happiness. The wider red stripe represents the blood shed for freedom, the warmth of the people, and their generosity.
The design was inspired by the French tricolor and was created by Pacifica Fernandez Oreamuno, the wife of then-president Jose Maria Castro Madriz. The flag was adopted on November 27, 1906, in its current proportions.
