About This Flag
The flag of Honduras consists of three equal horizontal bands — turquoise blue on top and bottom with white in the center — bearing five blue five-pointed stars arranged in an X pattern on the white stripe. The blue bands represent the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, the white symbolizes peace, and the five stars represent the five nations of the former Federal Republic of Central America (Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica) and the hope for a future reunion.
The flag is derived from the Federal Republic's banner and is similar to the flags of El Salvador and Nicaragua. It was adopted on March 7, 1866, with the addition of the five stars to the earlier plain blue-white-blue triband.
What the colors & design mean

Fun Facts
- The five stars on the flag represent an ideal that never materialized — the reunification of the five Central American nations that briefly formed a single republic from 1823 to 1841.
- Honduras shares its basic blue-white-blue flag design with El Salvador and Nicaragua, all derived from the Federal Republic of Central America's flag.
- Honduras is home to the ancient Maya city of Copan, one of the most important archaeological sites in the Maya world, known for its elaborate stelae and hieroglyphic stairway.
- The name Honduras means 'depths' in Spanish, reportedly because Columbus remarked on the deep waters off the coast when he arrived in 1502.
