About This Flag
The flag of the Czech Republic consists of two equal horizontal bands β white on top and red on the bottom β with a blue isosceles triangle extending from the hoist side to the center of the flag. The white and red are the traditional colors of Bohemia, dating back to the medieval Bohemian coat of arms (a white lion on a red field).
The blue triangle was added in 1920 to incorporate the colors of Moravia and Slovakia into the flag of the newly formed Czechoslovakia. When Czechoslovakia dissolved peacefully on January 1, 1993, the Czech Republic retained the shared flag despite an agreement that neither successor state would use it β Slovakia adopted a new design.
What the colors & design mean
White represents the people and peace, drawn from the Bohemian heraldic tradition. Red symbolizes courage and the blood of those who fought for freedom. Blue represents vigilance, truth, and loyalty, and was added to incorporate Moravian and Slovak identity into the original Bohemian colors.

Fun Facts
- The Czech Republic technically violated the agreement made during the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, which stipulated that neither successor state would use the former federation's flag β the Czechs kept it anyway.
- The blue triangle was added in 1920 to distinguish the flag from Poland's nearly identical white-and-red bicolor, and to represent the Moravian and Slovak peoples in the new state.
- Prague, the capital, is home to the Prague Castle complex, the largest ancient castle in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records.
- The white-and-red bicolor without the blue triangle was the original flag of Bohemia and is still used as the flag of the Bohemian region within the Czech Republic.
