About This Flag
The flag of South Sudan has three equal horizontal stripes of black, red, and green, separated by thin white stripes, with a blue equilateral triangle at the hoist bearing a gold five-pointed star. Adopted on July 9, 2011, the day the country became independent from Sudan following a 2011 referendum, the design closely mirrors the flag of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement.
Black represents the South Sudanese people, red the blood shed for freedom, green the land's fertility, white stands for peace, and blue for the waters of the Nile. The gold star symbolizes unity among the states.
