About This Flag
Five horizontal bands: blue (top), yellow, crimson (widest, center), yellow, and blue (bottom). Centered on the crimson band is a large black-and-white Nguni shield laid horizontally, with two spears and a staff decorated with feather tassels called injobo.
The shield and weapons are traditional Emasho regalia given to the king's regiment. Adopted on October 6, 1968, upon independence from Britain, the flag's design was inspired by a military standard King Sobhuza II gave to the Eswatini Defence Force in 1941 during World War II.
What the colors & design mean
Blue represents peace and stability. Yellow symbolizes the wealth of Eswatini's natural resources. Crimson stands for past battles and the courage of the people. The black-and-white shield represents the harmonious coexistence of Black and white citizens. The spears and staff signify protection.

Fun Facts
- Eswatini changed its name from Swaziland in 2018 to reflect its original Swazi-language name, making it the most recent African country to rename itself.
- The Nguni shield depicted on the flag is a specific ceremonial type, larger than a standard war shield, symbolizing royal authority.
- King Sobhuza II, who inspired the flag's design, holds the record as the world's longest-reigning monarch, ruling for over 82 years.
- The feathered injobo tassels on the staff are lourie and widowbird feathers, which are royal emblems restricted to the king's use.
