About This Flag
The flag of Zimbabwe has seven horizontal stripes — green, yellow, red, black, red, yellow, and green — with a white triangle at the hoist containing a red five-pointed star behind a Zimbabwe bird. Adopted on April 18, 1980, the day the country gained recognized independence as Zimbabwe, the flag replaced the brief Zimbabwe Rhodesia flag.
The Zimbabwe bird, derived from soapstone sculptures found at the ruins of Great Zimbabwe, is the country's national emblem. Green represents agriculture, yellow stands for mineral wealth, red symbolizes blood shed in the liberation war, and black represents the majority people.
What the colors & design mean
Green symbolizes agriculture and rural areas; yellow represents mineral wealth; red commemorates the blood shed during the liberation struggle; black stands for the heritage of the majority population. The white triangle represents peace, and the Zimbabwe bird symbolizes national heritage.
