About This Flag
The flag of Singapore consists of two equal horizontal bands β red on top and white on the bottom β with a white crescent moon and five white five-pointed stars arranged in a circle in the upper-left canton. The red represents universal brotherhood and the equality of all people, while the white symbolizes purity and virtue.
The crescent moon represents a young nation on the ascendant, and the five stars stand for the national ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice, and equality. The flag was first adopted on December 3, 1959, when Singapore gained self-governance from Britain, and was retained when the nation became fully independent in 1965.
