About This Flag
The flag of Luxembourg consists of three equal horizontal bands of red on top, white in the middle, and light blue on the bottom. The colors are derived from the coat of arms of the House of Luxembourg, which dates to the 13th century and features a red lion on a blue-and-white striped field.
Luxembourg's flag is often confused with the flag of the Netherlands, which has the same red-white-blue horizontal arrangement but uses a darker blue (cobalt) compared to Luxembourg's light sky blue. The flag has been in use since 1845 and was formally enshrined in law on June 23, 1972.
An alternative national symbol, the Roude Leiw (Red Lion) banner, is also commonly flown.
What the colors & design mean
Red represents the warmth of the people and the blood shed for independence. White symbolizes peace and honesty. Light blue represents the sky and freedom. The colors are drawn from the 13th-century coat of arms of the House of Luxembourg.

Fun Facts
- Luxembourg's flag is frequently confused with the Netherlands' flag — both are red-white-blue horizontal tricolors, but Luxembourg uses a distinctly lighter shade of blue.
- Many Luxembourgers prefer flying the Roude Leiw (Red Lion) banner — a white-and-blue striped field with a red lion — as they feel it is more distinctive than the tricolor.
- Luxembourg is the world's only remaining sovereign grand duchy, and the Grand Duke is the head of state.
- Despite having a population of only about 650,000, Luxembourg is home to major European Union institutions including the European Court of Justice and the European Investment Bank.
