About This Flag
The flag of Tonga features a red field with a white canton in the upper-left corner bearing a red couped cross (a cross that does not extend to the edges). The red represents the blood of Christ shed at the Crucifixion, and the cross symbolizes the Christian faith that is central to Tongan identity โ Tonga's constitution declares that the Sabbath is sacred and must be observed.
The flag's design is enshrined in the Tongan constitution, which states that it 'can never be altered' and 'shall always be the flag of this Kingdom.' The flag was designed by King George Tupou I and the Reverend Shirley Waldemar Baker and adopted in 1875 when Tonga's constitution was promulgated.
What the colors & design mean
Red represents the blood of Christ. The white canton represents purity. The red cross symbolizes Christianity, which is deeply woven into the constitutional identity of the Kingdom of Tonga.
Pattern: Canton Design
Fun Facts
- Tonga's constitution explicitly states that the national flag 'can never be altered,' making it one of the most constitutionally protected flag designs in the world.
- Tonga is the only Pacific island nation that was never formally colonized by a European power, maintaining its sovereignty through treaties and diplomatic agreements.
- The flag's design bears a strong resemblance to the flag of the Red Cross organization (coincidentally established around the same era), though the two designs were created independently.
- King George Tupou I, who helped design the flag, also abolished serfdom in Tonga in 1862 and established the constitutional monarchy that still governs the country.
