About This Flag
The flag of the Federated States of Micronesia features a light blue field with four white five-pointed stars arranged in a diamond pattern at the center. The blue represents the Pacific Ocean that surrounds and defines the nation.
The four stars represent the four states of the federation: Yap, Chuuk (formerly Truk), Pohnpei, and Kosrae. The stars are arranged in a diamond rather than a line to emphasize equality among the states.
The design is deliberately simple and was inspired by the flag of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which also featured stars on a blue field but had six stars (representing six districts). The flag was adopted on November 30, 1978.
What the colors & design mean
Light blue represents the vast Pacific Ocean surrounding the islands. The four white stars represent the four federated states: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae. Their diamond arrangement symbolizes equality and unity.
Pattern: Solid Field
Fun Facts
- The Federated States of Micronesia was part of the U.S.-administered Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, which was placed under U.S. control after Japan's defeat in World War II.
- The country's exclusive economic zone is one of the largest in the Pacific, covering over 2.6 million square kilometers of ocean — vastly larger than its 702 square kilometers of land.
- Nan Madol, on Pohnpei, is a ruined city of artificial islands built on a coral reef between the 1st and 17th centuries — sometimes called the 'Venice of the Pacific.'
- The original Trust Territory flag had six stars representing six districts; when the Marshall Islands and Palau chose separate paths, Micronesia reduced its flag to four stars for the remaining states.
