About This Flag
The flag of Fiji features a light blue field with the Union Jack in the upper-left canton and the shield from Fiji's coat of arms on the right side of the flag. The shield depicts a golden lion holding a cocoa pod above a St.
George's Cross, with sugar cane, a coconut palm, a dove of peace, and a bunch of bananas in the four quadrants. The light blue represents the Pacific Ocean, which plays a central role in Fijian life and economy.
The Union Jack reflects Fiji's colonial history as a British territory. The shield's imagery represents the country's agricultural heritage and its connection to British heraldic traditions.
The flag was adopted on October 10, 1970, upon independence from Britain.
