About This Flag
The flag of Rwanda features three horizontal bands: a broad light blue top half, a narrow yellow middle stripe, and a broad green bottom band. A golden sun with 24 rays sits in the upper-right corner of the blue band.
Adopted on October 25, 2001, the flag replaced the previous design bearing the letter 'R' after the 1994 genocide, symbolizing a national desire for renewal and unity. The blue represents happiness and peace, the yellow stands for economic development, and the green symbolizes hope and prosperity.
The sun and its rays reflect enlightenment and the transparency the new government pledged to uphold.
