About This Flag
Four equal horizontal bands of red (top), blue, yellow, and green. The flag was adopted on March 12, 1968, upon independence from the United Kingdom.
It was designed by the College of Arms in London. Red represents the struggle for independence and the blood shed for freedom, blue stands for the Indian Ocean surrounding the island, yellow symbolizes the bright future and the light of independence, and green reflects the lush vegetation and agriculture of the island.
Mauritius is one of the few countries whose flag features four horizontal bands of distinct colors.
