About This Flag
The flag of Estonia consists of three equal horizontal bands of blue on top, black in the middle, and white on the bottom. The blue represents the sky, sea, and lakes of Estonia as well as loyalty and devotion to the nation.
Black symbolizes the dark soil of the homeland and the suffering endured during centuries of foreign occupation. White stands for purity, hard work, and the aspiration toward enlightenment and the snow that blankets Estonia in winter.
The tricolor was first consecrated as the flag of the Estonian Students' Society on June 4, 1884, and became the national flag when Estonia declared independence on February 24, 1918. It was banned during Soviet occupation and restored on August 7, 1990.
