About This Flag
The flag of Montenegro features a red field bordered by a golden (yellow) edge, with the national coat of arms centered on the flag. The coat of arms depicts a golden two-headed eagle — symbol of the Petrovic-Njegos dynasty that ruled Montenegro for centuries — beneath a royal crown, with a lion passant on a blue shield on the eagle's chest.
The lion represents the biblical tribe of Judah and episcopal authority, reflecting Montenegro's historical ties to Venetian and Byzantine traditions. The red and gold color scheme was used by King Nikola I in the early 20th century.
The flag was adopted on July 12, 2004, two years before Montenegro formally declared independence from the State Union of Serbia and Montenegro in 2006.
What the colors & design mean
Red represents the blood shed for Montenegrin freedom. The golden border symbolizes the country's sovereign statehood. The double-headed eagle represents the Petrovic-Njegos dynasty. The lion on the shield symbolizes episcopal authority and Montenegro's Christian heritage.

Fun Facts
- Montenegro's name means 'Black Mountain' in Venetian Italian, referring to the dark appearance of Mount Lovcen when covered in dense forests.
- The double-headed eagle on Montenegro's flag is borrowed from the Petrovic-Njegos dynasty, which produced prince-bishops who ruled the country as a theocratic state for much of its history.
- Montenegro was one of the few Balkan regions never fully conquered by the Ottoman Empire, maintaining effective independence from its mountain strongholds for centuries.
- The country voted for independence from Serbia by a razor-thin margin of 55.5% in a 2006 referendum — just barely exceeding the 55% threshold required by the EU.
