About This Flag

Three equal horizontal bands of orange (top), white (center), and green (bottom) with a small orange circle centered on the white band. The flag was adopted on November 23, 1959, before Niger's full independence from France in 1960.

Orange represents the Sahara Desert in the north, white stands for purity and the Niger River, and green represents the fertile southern grasslands and hope. The central orange disc symbolizes the sun and the sacrifices made by the people.

The design closely resembles the flag of India but is distinguished by its proportions and the circle instead of a wheel.

What the colors & design mean

Orange symbolizes the arid northern Sahara Desert regions, white represents purity and the life-giving Niger River, and green stands for the fertile southern plains and hope. The orange circle at the center represents the sun and the sacrifices of the nation's people.

Fun Facts

  • Niger's flag is often confused with the flags of India and Ireland due to similar color arrangements, though the proportions and central emblem differ significantly.
  • The country is named after the Niger River, the third-longest river in Africa, though the river only flows through the southwestern corner of the country.
  • Niger contains the Agadez Mosque, originally built in the 16th century, featuring one of the tallest mud-brick minarets in the world at 27 meters.
  • The Sahara Desert covers more than 80 percent of Niger's land area, making it one of the hottest countries on Earth.
