About This Flag
The flag of Senegal is a vertical tricolor of green, yellow, and red, with a five-pointed green star centered on the yellow band. Adopted on August 20, 1960, when Senegal gained independence from France, the design was established after the brief Mali Federation dissolved and Senegal removed the federation's human figure, replacing it with the star.
The green-yellow-red palette reflects Pan-African unity. Green represents Islam and hope, yellow stands for wealth and the fruit of labor, and red recalls the sacrifice of those who fought for freedom.
The green star signifies African unity and hope.
What the colors & design mean
Green symbolizes Islam, the dominant religion, and hope; yellow represents natural wealth and productive labor; red honors the sacrifice made during the struggle for independence. The green star signifies African freedom and dignity.
