About This Flag
Two equal horizontal bands of light blue on top and green on the bottom, with a white isosceles triangle on the hoist side bearing a red five-pointed star at its center. The light blue represents the sky and the sea, as well as the Issa Somali people.
The green symbolizes the earth and the Afar people. The white triangle stands for peace, and the red star represents unity and the blood shed in the struggle for independence.
The flag was adopted on June 27, 1977, the day Djibouti gained independence from France. It is based on the flag of the Ligue Populaire Africaine pour l'Independance (LPAI), the political party that led the independence movement.
